Salvage operation…

Salvaged Drypnz, NB, 11 Feb 2014 023

This DRYPNZ painting was salvaged from a demolished building in New Brighton, it is now sitting inside an office for the local business association I think. I’m not sure what the plan is for the garage door, but it does raise some interesting points. This hasn’t been stolen from a building and taken captive for financial gain, but it has been decontextualised from its original site, how does this affect it? Is art in the streets intrinsically connected to site? Some works are made to be relocatable, some are created on sites that are entirely mobile. Is it different when a work is permissioned like this one, is this decontextualisation ok in this case?
